The Sam Tronnes Memorial Scholarship Foundation was created to help our hockey seniors with their post-high school education expenses.  52 Scholarships have been given in the last 6 years.  The scholarships are awarded at the Youth Varsity Tournament each year.

When the Tronnes family moved to Mitchell, SD in 1990, there was no ice hockey program in town.   Sam had played ice hockey in Minnesota prior to their move.  To continue his involvement in this sport, Sam joined the Huron Hockey organization.  The organization welcomed Sam and his family, and the Huron families became an important part of Sam’s life and his family’s life.  Sam played for them until his graduation from high school.  Because of Sam’s involvement in hockey, the Tronnes family became involved in creating a hockey program in Mitchell for their younger children.  When Sam died in an accident in 2005, the Huron Association began a scholarship program in his name.  Since that date, it has evolved into a memorial fund run by volunteers in several communities, with the executive committee based in Mitchell, SD.

Our applicants have an average 3.8 GPA, over half of them with a GPA of 4.0, have played hockey an average of 11 years each, have volunteered in youth coaching, helped feed the poor, worked for Special Olympics, helped the elderly, and are involved with 4-H activities and church activities, etc.  Many have been involved in other sports and scholastic programs.   They are captains of not only the hockey teams, but of other sports teams in high school.  In addition, they have businesses, jobs and still manage to be on the student council, honor societies and won other academic awards.

Their energy amazes us and it is extremely hard to choose only a few winners of the scholarships.  We have a dedicated group of educators, business people, and others who make those hard decisions.

In 2011, we had 36 applicants for scholarship monies out of approximately 115 senior hockey players, both male and female.  We were able to give $12,500 to 12 winners. That was almost three times the amount we were able to award in previous years and brought our total monies awarded to more than $35,000.

In 2010, we began the pro-hockey celebrity hunt to help us fund this foundation.  The goal of the foundation is to raise enough money to help hockey grow in other ways in South Dakota, such as helping new organizations start up, helping with equipment expenses, sending players to camps, etc.  We also wish to continue to help our players further their education.

All monies raised goes back into the foundation.  Many volunteers have worked to make these scholarships possible, and we appreciate and thank all of them.

Thank you again to all those who have donated their time, money, and efforts to help South Dakota Hockey Players with their education through Scholarships!
